OXENFREE, developed and released by Night School Studios. Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. You are Alex, and you’ve just brought your new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight island party gone horribly wrong.
The main reason I picked this up is for it’s artistry. I thought the marriage of 3D and Watercolor-type design gave the game a very organic look, and the stylized design was a welcome repose to the hyper-realistic graphics of today. The game play was very easy to grasp onto and only due to pilot error did I run into any hiccups. By selecting a multiple choice selection of dialog, the player is able to keep the conversation going between the characters, and kept that aspect of the story very natural. I’ve always been a fan of ghost stories, and I have always enjoyed a good tale that has a modern setting with a window into the past and how those two worlds connect, and Oxenfree delivers with flying colors on that.
The added element of tuning your handheld radio kept the roots of this story in the past, and I thoroughly enjoyed how it relied on that aspect to push the story along. Having watched several ghost hunting shows, the idea of having the ghosts speak through a “spirit box” type voice pushed that eeriness up to top notch level.
If you are interested in purchasing Oxenfree, it is CURRENTLY AVAILABLE for $19.99 USD, plus you can also get the GAME + SOUNDTRACK bundle for $24.99 USD.
