To describe Hyper Light Drifter in a single word, would be BREATHTAKING. It strengthens my belief that You do NOT need to have realistic graphics if the story and/or gameplay are tremendous. If you have a sound story, and the gameplay is engaging, then your players with dive head first into whatever world you build for them. The story has no dialog and is communicated to the viewer through visuals only. The soundtrack is mesmerizing and very Minecraft-esque – meaning it is very soothing and symphonic.
The story follows a lone Drifter, we know as The Magician. Drifters of this post-apocalyptic world are the collectors of forgotten knowledge, lost technologies and broken histories. The Magician is haunted by a terminal illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, steeped in blood and treasure hoping to discover a cure to his vicious disease. He is haunted by echoes of a dark and violent past that resonate randomly throughout his journey.
I’ve always loved games like this, where you have an entire world to continually explore, and once you unlock more weapons and abilities, you can revisit already explored areas only to explore further, similar to Axiom Verge, a game I played for last year’s MurphDay celebration. After two streams, I did more homework, reading up on the lore of the game and more strategy of how to complete the game in its entirety, so I started over. Which is why the first two videos are titled Alpha and Beta – with the third video being the official FIRST of the series.
Hyper Light Drifter is available on Steam for $19.99
